Hundreds of baby penguins found dead in Brazil - Yahoo! News

“Everything is seemingly spinning out of control” territory.

My idiot mind goes straight into airplane serial killer genre novel territory when I read that headline, like there was some kind of mass penguin grave uncovered by the Rio coppers and they have to bring in any one of my hundreds of paperback detectives to clear the case. Right now, I want Reacher on it.

The other part of my idiot brain goes into Jim Jones territory, with a charismatic elder penguin making the mamas make the babies drink the kool-aid.

Maybe next year, some daffy Hollywood type will do an animated movie about turkey buzzards and everybody will love their road-kill-eating scavenger asses. Christ, they’re birds. It reminds me of one of my favorite Thurber lines — “Good God, the birds have taken over!” I guess you had to be there.

FWIW, baby penguin carcasses have been washing up on South America beaches since there were penguins and South America. Only now, thanks to modern technology, we have people who can tell us about it, as if it mattered. Thanks, Internet!

Now that oil prices have dropped two days in a row, I want to see a Pelosi-led bailout of all the dipsticks who leveraged their ARM HELOCs into $160/bbl oil.

Lake Bryan is Al Gore’s worst fucking nightmare this weekend. I promise I’ll post a slideshow that will send Warmists into epileptic seizures. Put it this way — I feel like a nancy driving a half-ton.

Gore Calls for The Impossible Because He is The Gore

Posted by TFG on 17th July 2008

Gore Calls for Carbon-Free Electric Power - NYTimes.com

Former Vice President Al Gore said on Thursday that Americans must abandon electricity generated by fossil fuels within a decade and rely on the sun, the winds and other environmentally friendly sources of power, or risk losing their national security as well as their creature comforts.

“The survival of the United States of America as we know it is at risk,” Mr. Gore said in a speech to an energy conference here. “The future of human civilization is at stake.”

“Yeah, and you can buy it from me, Al Gore, Jr., former Senator, former Vice President.”

People pay to watch this snake-oil bullshit, and the Wretched Gray Spinster prints it up as the gospel truth. There is absolutely nothing, not one tiny centavo, to these horseapples. This sonofabitch is into Chariot of the Gods land with his lunacy, but I guaran-damn-tee you there are people all over America just pissing themselves thinking about a carbon-free America.

“The survival of the United States of America” is at risk. Are you kidding me? How in the fuck does this garbage go unchallenged? Why does this lame-ass “science” show up on my intertube screen? It’s aliens and Area 51 and Art Bell-level unmitigated horseshit.

We have simply got to find a way to stop it. It’s unreal, as in NOT FUCKING REAL! It’s fucking imaginary. Got it? It, global warming & climate crisis, it’s not FUCKING REAL. It’s fucking IMAGINARY.

Godalmighty damn.

I really need to stop drinking. This shit drives me berserk.

Looted, Schmooted

So Much for the ‘Looted Sites’ - WSJ.com

A recent mission to Iraq headed by top archaeologists from the U.S. and U.K. who specialize in Mesopotamia found that, contrary to received wisdom, southern Iraq’s most important historic sites — eight of them — had neither been seriously damaged nor looted after the American invasion. This, according to a report by staff writer Martin Bailey in the July issue of the Art Newspaper. The article has caused confusion, not to say consternation, among archaeologists and has been largely ignored by the mainstream press. Not surprising perhaps, since reports by experts blaming the U.S. for the postinvasion destruction of Iraq’s heritage have been regular fixtures of the news.

[...]

Neither the British Museum pair nor Prof. Stone responded to my calls seeking comment.

I remember all the wailing and gnashing of teeth by the loony left over the priceless antiquities that had been lost in the fog of war. I doubt I’ll ever see a single acknowledgement of their utter wrongness, much less an apology for their boneheaded value system where a flower pot is more important than a human.

Footnote: many more of these stories to come in the next few years, as Iraq becomes the higher-functioning, democratic nation-state that was intended from the git-go.

Whining about the whiners being called whiners

Posted by TFG on 16th July 2008

Right Wing Nut House » THE CONSERVATIVE’S SHAMEFUL DEFENSE OF GRAMM

That is easily the weirdest Rick Moran post I’ve ever read. Lots of bobbing and weaving around political machination correctitude and crap about being elected and how horrid Americans are feeling about themselves, and how those Americans need Phil Gramm’s and the rest of the GOP’s empathy. I guess if all you want to do is get somebody elected, that’s important. I’m sure it’s important if you want to stop the election of someone else, too. And the boys on the bus pretty rapidly dropped the curtain on ol’ Phil, anyway, so he’s probably right, from that perspective.

However, there is no question that a very large percentage of Americans have grown up to be whiny little babies, encouraged by a lot of political so-called leaders and a media machine that has to grind sausage 24/7. Phil Gramm was right — don’t tell me he wasn’t, not when there are doofuses lining up at 4am to buy their third freaking iPhone in 18 months during the same week.

This is all Oprah’s fault, you know. Yet another Chicagoan. I’m beginning to grow a small bit of distaste for a city I’ve always enjoyed visiting. Maybe they’re just brainwashed into some faux 21st-century touchy-feely populism by 150 years of Daleys. I dunno.

Nice 4-hour Paddle

These are on the upper Guadalupe, from 281 down to the first low-water crossing, about 7 miles. And 12 beers. Only swamped myself once, too.
