Joshy-Josh from the LALA POV

Posted by TFG on December 18th, 2012

“For the second year in a row, the Angels put out big money to land a slugger, giving their fan base hope and the Dodgers a little kick in the shins.”

I just checked and yes, the Angels did finish third in the short AL West last year. Which was won by the Oakland Athletics & a payroll of about CJ Wilson’s Axe Body Spray budget.

None of which is to indicate that I believe the Rangers aren’t looking up at the Halos, based on statistical evidence. Just saying, baseball is a screwy game, and it’s absolutely awesome, and I want to just hibernate, go to sleep, until Spring Training, and wake up to see what the Cattleman and the Quant have cooked up for my beloved Rangers. Except I don’t, I like all this jabber-jabber.

More Joshy-Josh / Halos & bonus Pujols from meganerd Posnanski, basically saying “they’re kind of old for baseball players.”

Which is not to indicate that I believe both of those two will never produce again. It wouldn’t surprise me if they didn’t, and it wouldn’t surprise me if they did. It would surprise me, greatly, if they both produced at MVP levels for the duration & price of their contracts…yes, that would surprise me an enormous amount, since it doesn’t appear to have ever been done.

Guh…I can’t end these baseball posts. How I hate plowing through these next few months of football and mutants-in-underwear-in-the-gym. I get a nice little jolt with Daytona, the Super Bowl is mildly interesting, but jeez, it’s just frozen tundra till April. Didn’t used to be this way, I could get on the bandwagon for all the other stuff. Of course, I had a bookie and some baksheesh then, and that injected a little ooo-la-la into the cold, hard, cruel winter.

  1. While fans and the media bemoan no action by uncle Nolie and JD, I say Christmas came early. No big contracts to Hamilton and Grienke was genius. 2 talented yet documented head cases. Want to sign someone to a big contract who is young, talented, and has his head on right? Elvis Andrus brother. He, Beltre, and Profar give u a great infield for years. Great defense for your 4 young starters. If Leonys Martin and Olt are untradeable, lets see what they got from now til the All Star break. Younger and faster is good for the Rangers right now whether it was planned or not. Add Pierzynski, a left handed bat, at catcher for some Soto and young starters seasoning. Tap the brakes Rangerland. Those starting rotations for LA and Oakland lost good pitchers and got worse.

I don’t like Perzynski, but mainly because of his appearance on the boob tube with his frosted tips, and the unavoidable fact that he’s 36 years old. These veteran-coach-seasoner deals never seem to work either. Just look at The Face and his hissy-fits. What did the ‘kids’ learn?

Otherwise, I agree with all of what you say.

Hold on now. Thought there’d be lots of chatter about the Astros entering the division. Always nice when a team with more than 200 losses in 2 years joins the “competition”. Houston always has trouble keeping teams competitive. I wonder why? Some say Phillies had a disastrous winter meeting. Ben Revere in CF for the “flying Hawaiian”? And Ruiz on meth and out for 25 games. 2013 is not going to be a good year for the Phills!

more than 200 losses in 2 year I think you’ve put your finger on the problem.

It’s all kind of a wash, since everybody is getting the same shot at them. Though I’m extremely pissed that it means interleague play every damn day of the season.

I haven’t tracked the Phils at all…can barely keep up with the stRangers. I need to look them up.

I wish we had Grienke. The other departures do not bother me. As the Giants proved again it’s pitching. Good pitching. That will take care of the Rangers. Litle Robbie Ross was a great statrter in the minors. We need a good bullpen

You do love Panic-Attack Greinke. Harrison from Homicide does not. I can somewhat see both sides. 20 wins to get us to the post-season, and then he’s in the fetal position out in the bullpen during Game 7.

I guess if the Dodgers get the value they expect for the insane amounts of money they have spent this winter, my little thought experiment will have at the very least some number of Greater Than Zero for a sample size on his potential for post-season head-case-ness.

I think that’s a long way of saying, “Maybe we’ll see which Greinke shows up this year.”
