Secession, y’all: Why Texas can pull it off

As of writing, the Texas petition to peacefully “withdraw” from the United States via the White House’s open petition webpage is up to 62,481 signatures, on its way to tripling the required names needed to trigger a response from the Obama administration. No doubt Texas’s desire to break free is a source of amusement inside a White House that has mastered the art of belittling the opinions of its challengers, but there is one not-so-small problem here: Texas could pull it off.

Well, I’m game to give it a go. Understand here, I’m the indigent fat guy with a terminal disease, so you can justifiably say that I’m just talking out my ass. But I’ve been saying it for a few years. I know the risks, or I think I do. I can envision the rewards, too, though. Me, I prefer to think big, swing for the fences, go for the big score…never believed in playing it safe. And really, I’d far rather spend my remaining time & energy working to make that particular project a success than just about anything else I can think of.

Good idea. Where does one sign the petition?

The radical me says “Why, hell yeah.” The practical me says ” It ain’t gonna happen.” I think I am just gonna concentrate on getting really small.

I take it you were a Romney supporter, he lost, and now you want out? Because had Romney won, things would be sooooo much better, the future sooooo much brighter? Texas could pull it off? Color me speechless. I’ve had so much to drink since any classroom learning, I could be wrong indeed so far off as to appear ignorant. However, as I recall in the early to mid 1800′s, Texas asked the US to annex them but at the time Texas was at war with Mexico so they were rebuffed. Later in the century, Texas asked again and the Congress barely passed a vote to annex them. I also recall Texas has the ability to break into 5 states, thereby gaining congressional advantage. I also remember that Texas was a Replublic but they don’t have any other special rights to seceed than any other state. OK – that’s all my brain can remember and perhaps that is incorrect. Another thing I remember from my book learnin days was that we fought a secessionist war. It was nasty, bloody, and awful but hey – you lost. So we want to talk about it again? We win, all is cool – lose and we’re leaving.

How many guys and gals are overseas fighting for America? How many Texans (I assume they are proud Americans, but I’ll refer to them as Texans here) have died during the past 10 years in a war started by another party (Iran didn’t knock those buildings down) with a leader of another party as well as race in charge? They fight for America and die for America and you honestly want to leave it? Because of an election? Because you lost? What has changed since last year? Last month? In fact, what has changed since any of us were alive? I can see the radicals in the middle east right now teaching their kids “You see? The US is unraveling. They will destroy themselves. Even those who call themselves the most American want out of it.”

Written blogs suck. If this is in jest or if you just got all caught up in the pride of Texas, I would like anyone reading what I wrote above to just wipe it from your mind. I do like the immense state pride Texans have – I lived there from ’84 – ’99. It’s sort of like how proud Pittsburghers are of the Steelers. If we were sitting at the bar drinking it would be much better but since I’m responding to the written word I’ll just pull an adjective out of the air and call it unfathomable. That a very very smart guy would spend the remainder of his time on earth working on this? Heck, I’m cancer free and I can’t think of a bigger waste of time. I’ll wager anyone reading here will agree the US is the greatest country on earth. Rather than make it better, you want to leave? Yup – that’s it, unfathomable.

First thing: that’s what you get for thinking. I’m not a Romney supporter so much as an Obama hater. Which is like preferring to get anally raped by the guy with the smaller wiener.

Second thing: I’ve been talking secession for years, not just this week like a lot of these parvenus. Get the election out of your arguments. I want it for the adventure of it, as well as being pretty fucking sure we can do government better, and making a better world for my grandsons. I can’t go into space, there’s no frontier left to roam, so this is about the extent of my wishful thinking. Look at it as a grand experiment, even if only in my mind.

Third thing: yes, the USA is the greatest country ever. Room for improvement, it has. Particularly over the last 30-40 years. I’m not going to re-debate 10 years of blogging in one comment, though.

Fourth thing: it’s drastically more than how Pittsburgh loves the Steelers.

Fifth thing: I intend to maintain friendly diplomatic relations with the USA. Should they choose that.

Sixth thing: why so unfathomable? This country you love seceded from Joly Olde. Secession is in our blood.

Seventh thing: I don’t think any state has a “right” to secede. That’s determined by, well, the success or failure of secession.

Eighth thing: oh, who fucking cares? Let’s just blow up all the borders, state capitals, etc., and let DC run every fucking thing. They’re geniuses, I see. Who needs these anachronisms called ‘states’? What a silly old notion. Just getting in the way of progress.

PS Written blogs do kind of suck. This one sure does.

That’s definitely too many for a lengthy reply, plus it’s not worth the effort – I’m not willing to spend the rest of my days working on it. Except for number 4 – it’s the same thing. Davey Crockett – Joe Greene (from ?), Stephen Austin – Art Rooney. In fact, the Steelers often talk about sucession from the rest of the NFL as they should really be in a higher league.

        • TFG says:

I have to bow my superiour Texas head to the football greatness of the Stillers. Jerry Jones (non-Texan) has all but ruined my care for the NFL.

But we both know Benny Barnes didn’t interfere with Lynn fucking Swann.

          • Bill Scherer says:

Heck, what would you even call yourselves? They’d have to throw out all the America’s Team stationary for one thing. That’s probably not even in your new country plan. The devil is in the details – and Jerry Jones is a detail.
