Me & The Wild Injuns

Posted by TFG on October 10th, 2012

GS1, yr hmbl svt, GS2

Yesterday afternoon, I took GS1 to the State Fair of Texas for a few hours. It was his Fair Day, a quaint custom that I am surprised to see has survived. His little brother, GS2, was in ‘school’, and his parental units met us later that day with him for their own Fair Day. Stupid amounts of money were spent on the sucker games of the Midway, primarily because I broke down in the face of GS1 nagging. We walked around the livestock area as much as I possibly could to forestall the Midway, but the barns were empty, as it’s turnover time from the FFAs and 4Hs to the big-time cattle barons and their breed-specific shows. We saw a dog frisbee show, a cow-milking exhibition, a sheep-shearing, an enormous hog, some horse-riding show-offy kind of deal, the Youth Market winners (sheep, goat, barrow, steer), the AgPower/John Deere display, and random other time-wasters. We ate a Fletchers’ corny dog, and wandered around the new trucks. The Midway, even though he had never ever been to the Midway, was impossible to stay away from. Good thing they had beer. I shudder to think what his parents spent after the hostage exchange, as they were planning to hit the rides.

I’ll be back on Saturday, during the UT-OU game, to drive a shuttle for the livestock exhibitors, twixt the overflow parking and the barns. I hope it’s hot, or at least warm, so as to enhance the girl-watching — no old man wants to see co-eds in warm coats.

If I dont have a Fletchers corny dog and get to walk around the Fair once a year I feel like I forgot something all year. I was with a catering team from Vick’s restaurant one year for a cattle auction. It was a lot of fun.

And I always loved Fair Days. I usually went with some brothers and sister.

Great pic. I really didn’t come here expecting that. I just came to write Chris Carpenter is 1-1. Single to right.

Solid double to left. 2 for 2. He might hit for the cycle. (I just can’t let this DH thing go).

LMAO, Bill. I’d go gather the hitting statistics for NL pitchers, or even the NL pitchers in the post-season, but that’s work, and I enjoy this too much to work on it.

Unlike most folks I never cared for the fair. Not even as a child. It was obvious the games were rigged. The rides did not compare to the ones at six flags. In fact it seemed that every three years some one was killed on one of those rides. No suprise there since they were run by white trash carneys who were probably doped to the gills. The livestock was a bit interesting but how long can one really look at fat pigs and cows. I too saw the dog show but that wasn’t much. I prefer watching them strap a monkey in a cowboy suit on the back of a sheep dog and see him run around. I never liked clowns either. Not funny.

      You’re so moody and aloof.

I like the fair for what it is…a greasy half-day of schlock. Even the carneys are interesting, in a socio-evo-bio kind of way, with a few beers in ye.

My goodness! I didn’t recognize you at first! But I love that photo and I’m glad y’all had fun at the fair. It’s something every child should experience at least a handful of times.

    Hugs!
