Nuttiest thing I’ve seen today

Yes, that’s a giant cardboard cutout of Ayatollah Khomeini, held aloft by real soldiers, re-enacting his return to Iran after 14 years in exile. And there wasn’t just one cardboard Khomeini, there were THREE.
At this point, the ceremony switches to a smaller reproduction (presumably because the original is too large to transport), which is gingerly seated in a truck and driven off.
Check out the slide-show in the linked Atlantic piece. What can you even say about that level of kookiness?
I’m personally intrigued by the nuts-and-bolts of this bit of Persian wacky, from inception to conclusion. “Hey, here’s an idea I thought up last night.” to the politics & jockeying of what unit gets to be in review at the bottom of the staircase, to the guy saying, “Wait, this big one isn’t going to fit in the truck…we need another one!” Intriguing…

Maybe the copies were in case one or more of the originals got torn into tiny bits by the frenzied crowd. (Okay, that happened for his funeral, but why not re-enact that too? Good times.)
