You know the right thing to do is help those people, and I recommend doing it through the Salvation Army. Damn near every nickel is going to get there, and that’s what we want. I’m just a fat guy typing into the internet, so if you have a favorite charity, use them, but do something. It’s a horrendous situation, and if I could find my way over there and be useful, I’d go. I bet you would, too.

Glad to see we agree on this. The Sally is just the best there is at helping people get it together again, with no political motive whatsoever. Unlike the Red Cross, for instance, which squanders more than half your contribution on its own salaries and expenses.

Does Sally get invovled outside US? Sort of always thought of them as local only.

I’m pretty sure they do…I know I’ve read stories about them being overseas.

I’m tiring of the bitching that the US isn’t using its magic wand to restore everything to everyone immediately. Haiti was in bad shape before the earthquake. After the destruction of its entire transportation, communication, housing, and health care infrastructure, ten of thousands of dead bodies, and now days of people without food, water, and medical care, it has to be just atrocious for anyone unlucky enough to be there. I hope folks there can hang on until help gets there. Help is on the way, but short of a magic wand it just can’t get everywhere it needs to be as quickly as it is needed, and it isn’t anybody’s fault.

Have the red pots and hand bells made it there yet

The Sally was in Haiti long before the earthquake. They’re pretty prominent in the Caribbean. Check out the link on the post. It’s all there.

Oddly enough, before the earthquake, the PBS station here re-aired this documentary about the founding of the Republic of Haiti, the world’s first black-run republic, by the way, and, well, they’ve not advanced much since 1790 or so. I mean, they’re a total basket-case, have been for my whole life, and if I live to be a very old man, probably will be when I die. What’s the solution? I don’t know, and it’s not my problem to solve, but if France re-colonized ‘em and made ‘em all slaves again, I don’t know that they wouldn’t be better off. And what of the Dominican Republic-I mean, did the earthquake damage magically stop at the border? What a mess.

All Haiti has ever had was crime, voodoo and dictatorship.

The Sally started across the pond.
