SA Tea Party – J409

Posted by TFG on July 5th, 2009

Here’s a slideshow of my pictures from the Tea Party yesterday:

If you click the Flickr link, you can read my comments and mine them for comedic gold.

It’s actually embarrassing that the photos are so…well, to me, they’re horrifyingly bad. I used to have some pride in my photography, but I realize that was back in the days when I was even poorer than I am now, so I tried my best to make every frame at least decent. When it’s just digital, it’s just trash, to my mind, so I don’t care enough to try. It would help, probably, if I ever bothered to wipe off the lens cover with more than the tail of my Hawiian shirt.

I think they all serve very well.

A sea of empty chairs, how embarrassing. Faithfully recorded, however. Good job, Mr. Citizen Journalist. No Gerbilist you.

I’m hoping Sarah Palin will take over this movement. It’s only realistic hope, probably.

Not embarassing at all. You wouldn’t have been sitting in those seats in the direct 105° broiling Texas sun. If you look at the pix on Flickr, you can see my comments about it. As the shade line moved, the people moved with it. By dusk, the lawn was packed, as people moved out into what was previously a blowtorch. I mean, we are stubborn people, us Texans, but we’re not stupid.

  2. Dick Stanley says:

Oh. Too bad you didn’t capture the change in photos. So how many (estimated) showed up?

    • TFG says:

Yeah, I know. I tried, but dangit, I’m a salesman, Dick.

Eep – don’t get me to lying about crowd size. A hundred? A million? Somewhere in between there. Lots, anyway. I was impressed that, whatever the number was, they gave up getting shit-faced in the backyard on a record-setting hot day, in San Antonio, the home of the backyard shit-faced bank holiday (NTTATWWT).

I’m telling you, bro, and I speak as a man with seven years of running music festivals in Texas summers, it was a scorcher. I, of course, am extremely experienced & knowledgable in these matters, and I was sloshing from all the water I drank.

  3. Sgt. Mom says:

4-5,000. And yes, at the hottest part of the day it was 105 … so no, no one was sitting out in those chairs at first. They were all back under the trees.

  4. Dick Stanley says:

    Thousands? Whoa.

Easy way to estimate a crowd is treat it like a square, and count the heads on two sides and multiply. Works best when they’re all sitting in a recognizable geometric shape.

I wonder how this bunch would react to Palin? She talks their language. On the other hand, I read they booed Cronyn in Austin. He’s a small-government guy if they ever was one.

    • TFG says:

She’s already an enormous hit with the Tea Partiers. Plenty of Palin signs out there. Another area I failed to capture.

Cornyn got booed because of his moderate statement about giving Sotomayor a fair hearing, probably. He’s had a couple of Kumbayah mis-steps too I think. In general, a good guy, though.

  5. Liberty says:

Digital is better. Why? ‘Cause I still have rolls of undeveloped film circa 1995 or so.

  6. Da Goddess says:

I don’t think the majority of photos sucked. Seriously. And when it comes to capturing various aspects, you get a little sun and blah blah blah. It’s okay! In the end you got photos that told the story and you gotta love that.

Even with the heat, it sounds like a damn good time.

I compiled together 105 Tea Party videos uploaded to youtube the night of July 4th 2009. Thumbnailed and linked. If you’re interested in what the diff Tea Parties looked like across the nation take a look. It’s in my website url
