Vanderleun’s in…Texas?

Posted by TFG on January 4th, 2009

OK, Austin. Kind of a dope-smoking hippie version of Texas. Which should give you pause.

How did the hippies gain control of the most beautiful part of Texas?

Well, if ever the phrase “at your leisure, my lege” meant anything outside of Old Crikey, it’s there.

I hear tell Austin’s really nice, but my TX cousins didn’t go to college there “because of all the drugs”. And speaking of which, up here in Bass Pro land, my sole knowledge of Austin comes from “Austin City Limits” on PBS and they’re getting less “country” and more “alternative and weird” all the time, so much so that the other day, I was talking on the phone with the sound turned down and I saw what appeared to be Ozzy Osbourne, but with a nice makeover and a lovely blond ‘do and I thought, well, good on yer, mate, but as it turns out, it was Lucinda Williams, and after I turned up the sound, she was singing about her man biting her neck/slapping her ass/dragging her down a thousand miles of gravel road or some such, as she does-but I still like her.

I wish you a happy and prosperous 2009, sir!

I love that description of Lucinda Williams – she are what she are and she do it well. Yes, there are parts of Austin that just make you weep at the Texas beauty of the place. Even in the middle of the city. I’ve got to hand it to the hippies for preserving it.

Happy new year to you, as well, sir. As Charles said, there’s nowhere to go but up.

The hippies are just hype. Even in the days of Armadillo World HQ, when the drugs were far more plentiful and obvious, the hippies stood out by being in the fringe minority. The city used to be run, more or less, by the U. Then the techies arrived and now it feels more and more like Dallas every day. Still pretty country, though, when you get away from the sprawl and the panhandlers.
