Life on the fringes of U.S. suburbia becomes untenable with rising gas costs - International Herald Tribune
I predict the man will do what’s right by his family, but he could be an Obamaniac and screw it all up by moving his kids into a nice 5th-floor walkup and telling them to fend for themselves. There’s a lot of that going around.

I live in a small community about 45 minutes outside of Dallas/Fort Worth, about 4 years ago, people flooded into the little community and we were overrun with subdivisions. They were building one up the road from me (I’ve got 5 acres) when the mortgage crisis hit this year — it’s halfway finished, just sitting there. I pass by it everyday as I go to work thinking what waste of money.

Down south here in Mexico Jr. they’re still scraping dirt for development farther and farther out everywhere you go. Most people make rational choices, and most of them work out, so I don’t worry about all those hollowed-out exurbs that are supposed to be raining down on us.

People used to scoff at all the empty skyscrapers built in Austin, but the guy who owned the land got paid, the guys who built the building got paid, the city made a longterm bet on property taxes, which eventually paid off, and only the owner of the building really got screwed, but only if he couldn’t wait it out until he found enough tenants. The buildings eventually filled up, and the developers are building more condos downtown. The future is urban. Unless the solar cell and electric car guys get there first. Like most Americans who still believe in progress, I’m betting on them.

I’ve decided I’ll never commute for work again. Not unless it’s some great assignment and then it’s just for the day anyway. But, never. again. with the daily drive. There’s no way on earth I could afford it anyway.
