Camel Walk, by Southern Culture on the Skids
SCOTS is one of the great one-album wonders of the world. Clearly inspired at least in part by the B-52s, they were grittier and way more South than Fred and the girls. Camel Walk had a brief stint at the top of the Ironic Hipster charts, but most of them never heard the rest of the album, and they were poorer for it. Eight-Piece Box is genius double-entendre, Skullbucket is awesome surf music, Whole Lotta Things is a nice bouncy sing-a-long that makes me grin big, and Soul City is, as far as I’m concerned, one of the few perfect party songs. Dirt Track Date is damn near a perfect album. Too bad they never really followed up, or too bad I never really kept following.
Oh, hey, look — two new albums. Nyuk, nyuk.
Damn, this is lame, talking about music like I know what I’m doing, but I do sincerely love this stuff. OK, I got work to do before putting on my jammies.

I saw SCOTS live at a little club in Huntsville, AL, many years ago. Great live band.

I thoroughly enjoyed their song, “White Trash,” from the “Beavis & Butthead Do America” soundtrack, and meant to look into them more, but haven’t. Mayhaps I should.

You’d probably dig ‘em. Post-punk, scratchy dirty guitar, well-written lyrics, nice composition (I think…I’m not a musician.) Pure throw-away pop, but damn fun stuff.

I’m listening to those two albums right now - the verdict is “awesome” in their new configuration. Very highly recommended. So far.

I’m not kidding - I love these two albums I linked. Makes me wish I was young and good looking enough to go on a hunt. Problem is, you so damn rarely find this kind of stuff being played live. It’s almost always a disappointment. But is that age talking? Fuck it, I love that garage sound. I hope I still do when I’m 80, too.

The wife and I, who hadn’t made the bar scene in about 20 years, loved them so much we saw them live in ATL about five years ago–hip little dive rock bar in Buckhead. Show was supposed to start at 10:00 (around my bedtime) but being a casual production, SCOTS didn’t get cranking till about midnight-thirty. Even hours of standing up (no chairs–we rock here), nursing warm scotch (had to drive home), studiously not checking out the young talent (obvious) was worth it. That spare sound of theirs translates exactly live. Highlight: When the lead singer fired a crispy chicken thigh into the crowd during 8-piece Box, the hot little brunette in front of us instinctively ducked and the chicken nailed my wife right in forehead. Staggered, stunned, a bit of grease trickling down her nose, she still managed to graciously acknowledge the envy of the crowd around us. Yes, “You got the chicken!” was actually murmered admiringly. Did I mention it was LOUD?–I mean peeling your forehead back like a bald man loud, I mean feeling you shirt buttons buzz against your chest loud. Wobbled out onto Peachtree Street about 3:00 a.m. feeling like I’d done 500 miles of interstate with my head hanging out of a convertible. Great show.
Oldsters still rock! (it just hurts a lot more)
