Man, that’s depressing

Posted by TFG on April 22nd, 2008

Era of cheap food ends as prices surge - Times Online
My father and my grandfather and my uncles and my cousins worked their asses off to feed the world. Lots of geniuses worked really hard to create crops that you could grow in a goddamned desert. Yet, here we are. My grandsons are gonna have to beat this crap back into the hole from which it sprang.

I’ll tell you this — cheap food ain’t over. It’s just blocked. By governments and bureaucrats. Get them out of the way, and see how cheap you can feed yourself and your family.

Cheap is relative. Given the dollars steep decline of late, I’m not sure the price of food has really gone up at all. But there’s gotta be a crisis every day or a lot of people will lose their phony-baloney jobs.

I’ll tell ya what ain’t cheap…coffee. Ten simoleans for a can this morning. I hate running out of coffee.

And yet, for my bachelor buck, frozen pizza is as cheap as it was 15-20 years ago, frozen chicken breasts are on sale really cheap most of the time, and hereabouts, I can buy those 34.5 ounce cans of coffee for $5 or less pretty consistently.

But someone needs nuking over the high oil prices, just on general principle-can’t Obama go stand on one leg and make Kung-San-like clicky noises at his Musselmen homies and solve this crisis? David Allan Coe could go and help out, even.
