I’ve got great musical taste

Posted by TFG on March 11th, 2008

There’s something beautiful about Marcia Ball followed by Steve Earle followed by The Allman Brothers followed by Justin Trevino. I’m so glad I’m a Texan that I can not only know these guys, but appreciate what they mean in the so-called Grand Scheme of Things.

And I had nothing to do with it…just soaked it all up, where it was, and where I was. It’s silly to even care as I approach 50, but screw it. I love it so much.

Marcia Ball was just in San Diego. I wanted to go see her, but I was afraid she’d launch into another one of her Blame America, Impeach Bush, Cindy Sheehan is my best friend tirades like she did last time. Why can’t musicians just shut up and entertain us? That’s what we pay money for at the door. We want to leave our worries behind and just relax for an evening. The real kicker was that she was opening for John Hammond, who I also really wanted to see.

The music is beautiful. The proselytizing, not so much.

    Sigh.

(Don’t worry, I get mad at Dr. John and Steve Earle for the same thing)

Hell, that’s why I got itunes, ipod, and youtube. I don’t have to listen to their intellectual bullshit. It would drive me just as crazy if they were bush-lovers. The silly thing is that nobody but Neil Young thinks their music is gonna change dick, so they record music that they think will last. God love em, but they’re mostly morons…something to do with that creative gene, I don’t know.

I agree with you completely, TFG. Unfortunately, many of these folks have to open their mouths for something other than singing in concert, which really kills the mood. I actually witnessed a mass exodus from a North Mississippi Allstars concert once because bassist Chris Chew went all political on the crowd.

I don’t want to hear politics at a concert. I want music. My money’s too precious to be wasted listening to anyone’s political crap, from any point of view. Music is meant as an escape from reality.

By the way, Marcia’s included on the new Legendary Rhythm & Blues Revue CD with Tommy Castro, Ronnie Baker Brooks, Deanna Bogart, and Magic Dick (J. Geils Band), which also includes Elvin Bishop and Curtis Salgado. It’s kickass music from beginning to end. Well worth the cost.
