The Only Race I Give a Damn About

Dale Earnhardt Jr., Denny Hamlin win qualifiers to set stage for a Hendrick-Gibbs showdown - NASCAR - Yahoo! Sports

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Hendrick vs. Gibbs. Jimmie, Jeff and Junior vs. Tony, Denny and Kyle.

Hendrick Motorsports’ top two drivers hold a combined six Cup series championships — and the other guy just happens to be NASCAR’s most popular driver and a restrictor-plate racing wizard. Joe Gibbs Racing has a two-time champion and two of the series’ rising stars.

How big is this Daytona 500 showdown?

“It’s going to be the epic battle, and it should be the battle of a lifetime and the century,” Gibbs driver Tony Stewart quipped. “There may not be another battle of this proportion for the rest of my life, my career, for the century.”

You just gotta love Tony Stewart for spewing out the requisite verbiage for the ink-stained wretches. I’ve always liked that dude. Equally-cocky Robby Gordon is starting back in 26th, and I’m hoping for a good race from him, as well. Open-wheel pretty-boy Canucks failed to make the field, so that’s An Good. I like open-wheel racing, but I don’t want the fancy-pants hogging up more of the oxygen than necessary. No matter how international and high-tech NASCAR gets, I still want the grits and bacon grease to thrive.

Should I smoke a brisket tomorrow to graze on during the race, or something quicker on Sunday morning? I dunno. Suggestions? A roast, maybe, or a pork loin? Rack of ribs? Yes, rack of ribs.
