Three Days, Two Kirby’s and a nasty virus

Posted by TFG on January 3rd, 2008

That’s a 50th-birthday dinner in Dallas for my oldest pard, a NYE bar & cigar stop in San Antonio, and somewhere along the way, a simple pisser of a virus that has made me feel like I drove off a cliff for the last three days.

I guess the only important thing in this post is that San Antonio now has a steakhouse that I can comfortably make my own, being as fond of Kirby’s as I am. I seriously don’t think there’s a better place in the world, and definitely not for the money. You can spend more, and I have, but it’s simply not worth it.

This Kirby’s allows smoking at the bar, too, so a bourbon and a cigar after dinner doesn’t mean leaving. The best part? It’s a three minute drive home, five if the light’s red.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go back to coughing my lungs up, sneezing my sinuses out, and pondering the possibilities of using a hand-held drill to relieve the pressure inside my skull. Over…

Ugh. 15 miles out of downtown. That puts me out of cab range. Why can’t all these podunk burgs in this state do something nice for business travelers like we did with Uptown? Hell, Bobs is only 3 miles from downtown Dallas.

At least it is better than Houston. I usually stay around the corner from the Strip House, but I always feel like I’ve been the one boned after I see the bill there.

Get well soon and happy New Year!

    Spoilers ahead!

And since I’m too lazy to post again, I have to admit I am unfamiliar with Cormac McCarthy as well. I’ev heard of him, and saw the TV version of Lonesome Dove, but never read anything by him. Saw No Country for Old Men over the holidaze with a neighbor who is from West Texas. My neighbor loved the characterizations but noted that the area code (210?) didn’t exist in 1980, when the action took place. I liked the movie but think I need to see it again to understand it better, definitely a film that makes you think, especially since the “The Sopranos” like ending caught me a little off guard, though to be fair, they had probably come up with this ending before Mr. Chase did.

Also, go to a Rose Bowl at least once in your life. Wow. I witnessed my alma mater get stomped on and still had a great time. Even the jaded media people there said there was nothing like it in college football.

Phelps, you’ve got the Riverwalk downtown. And you want more Uptown-ish douchebags???

  4. TFG Says:

Charles, by all means, go buy the book and read it before you see it again. Obviously, McCarthy has a lot more room to work out in than a film-maker. I’m pretty sure you’ll appreciate it.

hey, hey, Keep San Antonio Lame. Please.

Knocking back beers, smoking cigars and jawing late at night next to a pointless fire in freezing weather. Would your Mamma say that had anything to do with you getting sick?

  7. KM Says:

Why is the time stamp East Coast?

  8. TFG Says:

My mama might. Which is why I haven’t consulted with her as yet.

    Time stamp fixed…

Try a Neti Pot for the sinuses. Sounds awful, pouring salted water in your nose but it’s a good temporary remedy that imminently repeatable.
