Whaddya mean, not that kind of Western?

Posted by TFG on November 8th, 2007

A little while ago, Rachel requested suggestions for four books which defined Western culture.

Mine are:
1. Lonesome Dove
2. All of Zane Grey
3. Lonesome Dove, again
4. beer

I recommend working in some J. Frank Dobie during Nos. 3 & 4 — after all, you know what’s gonna happen, you won’t miss anything. If you need a background music list, drop me a line, but start off with Marty Robbins, the original Gangsta Rapper.

  1. Kramer Says:

Owen Wister’s “The Virginian,” “Haunted Mesa” - the “modern” Archer trilogy by Larry McMurtry (Last Picture Show &c.)

    Maybe Mark Twain’s canon?

  2. charles austin Says:

    Shane
    Little House on the Prairie
    L.A. Confidential

  3. Scotch Drinker Says:

    1. Any Louis L’Amour.
    2. Any Jack London short stories
    3. Fredric Remington and Charles M. Russell
    4. Riders of the Purple Sage

  4. Kramer Says:

Rudolfo Anaya, his modern “romance” Albuquerque trilogy (5 books).

Leslie Marmon Silko’s “Almanac of the Dead” is a great one, up with Lonesome Dove in breadth and scope.

Try some Cormack McCarthy from Blood Merdian and onward
