Double Bad

Posted by TFG on 6th September 2007

I blew my back out playing some really lame hackish golf today.

So I go home, flip on the ball game, and there’s twee Bob Costas chatting with smug-lord Keith Olberman.

I guess the NFL producers figured that one Dennis Miller sucked, so an entire studio of them would be sheer genius.

I also guess I’m going to have to acknowledge that my body is deserting me. Can’t blame it — I’ve abused it pretty heinously. They say yoga will help you out. Maybe I should try that.

Sorry to be boring, but nothing interests me much.

DCist: Fenty Announces Gun Appeal

And when it comes to timing, well, it’s not easy to make the case that the handgun ban makes District residents safer when the weekend saw a spate of killings and our homicide tally is higher than it was this time last year. Sure, that doesn’t mean much in practice — after all, we could have no more killings this year — but it makes for some awkward symbolism.

Awkward, to say the least. Awkward, as in, a handgun ban hasn’t really done all that much to make Our Nation’s Capital terribly safe. Awkward, as in, who’s taking bets that there will be no more kilings in WDC this year? But really, that’s all this Bill of Rights biz is — some symbolism of some sort or another, to be trotted out on occasion to make your blog post and help sell t-shirts for Nick Denton (does he still (or did he ever do) the hip-scenester ‘-ist’ sites?).

The goofball writing this can’t be arsed to use either a number or a link, and I can’t be arsed to look it up. As a knee-jerking right-wing gun nut, I have to wonder out loud, rhetorically, how many of those killings might have been preventable by Constitutionally-unfettered access to a handgun? Guns, outlaws, etc.

Here I was, feeling all nice and stuff

Posted by TFG on 4th September 2007

You know — football, World Series, The Chase, camping weather not too far off, less mowing.

Then I realize the US Congress is back at work.

I’m on board

Varifrank: Announcement: I’ve got a little list…

From this day forward, I shall use the perjorative term “toe-tapper” to describe someone I wish to mock. I hope to start a world wide popular movement of anti-”toe-tapping” bigotry.

Been looking for something like this for a while. I’ve used the word “dilletante” in the past and basically get naught but blank stares. My pal Otis is fond of ‘popinjay.’ That’s even more obscure, sadly, yet probably more correct. Toe-tapper is as good as any, I reckon.

Except this — I’m a pretty bad toe-tapper. An example might serve: this morning, I went to the corner convenience store to buy some beer and some ice. I ended up behind the dude buying scratch-off lotto tickets and looking at the Sunday paper and flicking all the Bics and waiting for his girlfriend to pick out her bottle of water. As my patience with morons has withered to zero, my empathy with my fellow human creatures has likeways vanished. Still, I strive to be a gentleman and decent human being. Rather than pull a roscoe and put a slug in him and the cashier (for putting up with this nonsense), my only defense, my last bulwark against homicide, is the toe tap, combined with the steely glare. Of course, none of it works, and I seriously doubt that the moron and his moron girlfriend even noticed, nor would they have cared if it did intrude in their consciousness.

Anyway, point is, we need a delineation, perhaps a re-terming, of the impatient moron-directed toe-tap. Maybe it’s just me?

U.S.: NKorea to declare nuclear programs

U.S.: NKorea to declare nuclear programs - Yahoo! News

North Korea agreed Sunday to account for and disable its atomic programs by the end of the year, offering its first timeline for a process long sought by nuclear negotiators, the chief U.S. envoy said.

Kim Gye Gwan, head of the North Korean delegation, said separately his country’s willingness to cooperate was clear — in return for “political and economic compensation” — but he mentioned no dates.

Correct me if I’m wrong here, but didn’t the Norks already lie through their teeth about their nuclear plans to an American president and set of American diplomats once already?

Let’s hope that this time they don’t have their fingers crossed. Let’s hope that BushCo negotiated American (military) verification, and that we’re not leaving it to the trans-national NGOs.

Meantime, let the speculation begin on why — Kim “Long Dong” Jong Il is not celebrated for his rationality, nor for his commitment to his countrymen’s well-being. Coup?
