Liberal Thought Process

DCist: Fenty Announces Gun Appeal

And when it comes to timing, well, it’s not easy to make the case that the handgun ban makes District residents safer when the weekend saw a spate of killings and our homicide tally is higher than it was this time last year. Sure, that doesn’t mean much in practice — after all, we could have no more killings this year — but it makes for some awkward symbolism.

Awkward, to say the least. Awkward, as in, a handgun ban hasn’t really done all that much to make Our Nation’s Capital terribly safe. Awkward, as in, who’s taking bets that there will be no more kilings in WDC this year? But really, that’s all this Bill of Rights biz is — some symbolism of some sort or another, to be trotted out on occasion to make your blog post and help sell t-shirts for Nick Denton (does he still (or did he ever do) the hip-scenester ‘-ist’ sites?).

The goofball writing this can’t be arsed to use either a number or a link, and I can’t be arsed to look it up. As a knee-jerking right-wing gun nut, I have to wonder out loud, rhetorically, how many of those killings might have been preventable by Constitutionally-unfettered access to a handgun? Guns, outlaws, etc.

I’m wondering what the Anti-Gun crowd will talk about now, especially since crimes with guns have increased fourfold since 1998 in the UK.

Talking about UK crime, hark back to this blast from former PM Blair. It so SO politically incorrect: http://www.thestar.com/News/article/202661
