Ammunition Shortage Squeezes Police
Lookie here — every cop in America doesn’t need to become an Expert Marksman with the full-auto AR-15 on the taxpayer dime. Train ‘em up on the bog-standard pump-action room broom, and you’ve got 99% of the situations covered. The other 1%, they can pay for themselves, if they’re so inclined. Many are, anyway.
Or call out SWAT. God knows we’ve pumped enough into that black hole over the last six years — they’re so desperate to justify their existence, they’re knocking over poker rooms and appearing on teevee shows.

Of course, certain Jackbooted Thug members of the Police-Folk ought to be issued old .32 S&W break-open revolvers and be made to ride those old large front wheel bicycles on patrol, and there seem to be plenty of them.
I was at the big gun show here yesterday (www.rkshows.com), and dang, even if you buy in bulk, .223 ammo is crowding $7 per 20, while various 7.62×39mm stuff was running a little under $4 per 20, even in small batches. Stripped AR-15 lowers could be had for as little as $100, however, which is a deal.
I rejoice because my state will be dropping the $10 “permit to acquire a concealable firearm” for handguns as of August 28th (this paid to the local sheriff for a state criminal background check, required for all private handgun transfers and even for buying a gun from a dealer, and yep, they still did the federal check in addition to the state check) , which clearly pissed off the sheriff’s deputy I was talking to about the law change, with a gun dealer friend of mine, heh heh.

I’ve been paying $7 per 20 for .308/7.62×51 — it’s that Russki Silver Bear stuff, which is un-reload-able. Every now and then I’ll find that at CTD for $5 per 20, and I’ll get a couple hundred. It’s good for TEOTWAKI & not too shabby for my target practice. If I can ever get my garage cleaned out of moving boxes and lady gee-gaws, I plan to set up a reload station, but the way things are going, I expect that to be about 2020.
Since I’m not an AR man, I don’t pay much attention to .223, but if I get one of those Rem 870s, I guess I’ll need to start doing that.
Our big gun-nut change this is year is adoption of the Castle Doctrine. Combined with the right to pack in your vehicle, it’s almost back to the way it should be. My next wish is for there to be legal open carry, and I figure that should be the next battleground for forward-thinking states.

I think our own Castle Doctrine also becomes law in 8 days, and we *have* legal open carry, though it’s infringed in many locales, by grandfathered local law or ignorant gendearmes.
Similarly, state law says women can go topless, but a whole lot of counties and municipalities say otherwise, mores the pity
That .308 price isn’t bad at all, when you consider how much more power you get over .223 for the same money. While I have a .30-’06 and .243 for whacking deer, when I’m in the family swamp, the .223 is more than all I need for anything, assuming we don’t get too many more black bears wandering up from Arkansas over the next few years, and we may, at that.
That pump-action Remington that takes the AR magazines shows promise, though I’m afraid they’ll ask a large premium over the Model 7600 centerfire rifle on which it’s based. My, but 7600s in all sorts of calibers (.243 to .35 Whelen, and everything in-between), in great shape, were all over the gun show last weekend for around $400, and they’re all good rifles, from what I understand, even with the standard 4- or 5-shot detachable magazines.
