It’s now a classic

Posted by TFG on July 28th, 2007

Twenty-five (25) years old? Fookin’ hell.

Kinda sorta via Florida Cracker

More 80s fetishes of mine — Sonic Youth. That Thurston kid did more with a guitar than I’d seen before or since.

And this is still an all-time ‘crank it to 11′ favorite:

Nobody I knew ever knew quite got it the same way I did, either. I’m still at a loss to try to explain the appeal of this song to me. It’s just that freaky guitar that takes front and center in my head, weird notes and all, just loping and driving and gouging. Rockin’ stuff.

BTW, I still have my old copy of SY’s Daydream Nation on vinyl. Those songs don’t sound dated at all…

You know, I bought a whole new stereo system to play Sonic Youth, now that I think about it. I just couldn’t get enough out of my old one. I probably pissed off more neighbors with SY than anything else in my life. You probably got SY as much as I did, but you’re a guitar god, so you understand all that tuning stuff that Moore did.

I can just imagine the stories about Gibby — he’s a madman, and pretty much genius. One day, we’ll actually get together, and I’ll tell you the long version of the time the Loco Gringos showed up at one of our warehouse parties. Speaking of getting together, I’ve finally finished the deck, and we should have a grilling nigh with the little ladies.

and pick a school day, I’ll take you (coastal) fishing…

    The eighties were weird.
