A long-time webfriend

Posted by TFG on December 5th, 2006

I’m happy to note that Janis Gore, a TFG OG Blogroll member, now has an RSS feed. She’s filed in my next-gen blogroll under Texas, because she’s a Dallas lady (who remembers Titche’s*), married to a Louisiana gentleman lawyer, and residing in that fine state now. For those new to these parts, Janis’ recipes have been tried and tested in the TFG Kitchen Laboratories many times, and never found wanting by either the cook or the customers. But my backlog continues to grow, and my capabilities continue to shrink, so it could happen. But, here’s just a sample from her latest recommendation:

In a saucepan, melt 4 sticks butter

Gosh, I love those Cajuns…

* Titche’s (tie - chuz) is a long-gone department store that’s probably part of the May or Macy empire now, and it’s my verbal shorthand for anything to do with fancy-pants cloths (“Guess I best go to Titche’s and get a new pair of pants before I go to stupid New York.”). The only thing more retro-TFG-Dallas might be EM Kahn’s, but I’ve never asked her about that.

I was just a young girl, but when my brothers could earn their own money, they would occasionally shop at Kahn’s.

Mother could never afford it, so I grew up thinking it was a men’s store. Is that true?

Do you remember Robert Hall stores? My first store-bought dress came from there.

  2. TFG Says:

My extremely vague recollection was that it was a men’s store, but maybe because I only went there once or twice to buy some nice church clothes when my grand-dad decided I was too ragamuffinish AND it was near a major holiday. It wasn’t a regular stop — more like Levine’s for us Skeeters.

I haven’t even thought of the name Robert Hall’s in decades, but yes, I do remember their print ads in the DMN and their teevee ads, too, I think. It seemed super-stylish to me, on level with Titche’s.

  3. Janis Gore Says:

We were Levine’s, too, but one of my brothers laid out for a dress for a formal photograph when I was about five years old.

Truly manic eyes, that little girl has.

And it wasn’t at all high-toned as I remember. It might even have been in Oak Cliff.

    I think I’ll go see.

That’s hilarious to learn at this late date that
    a) Robert Hall’s wasn’t as upscale as I thought it was, and
    b) people were getting into trouble with credit cards even back then, and thinking it was something to be proud of that their durn jeans were from Penny’s.

You should see this one — it’ll keep you up all night:

It mentions Ashburn’s and Shakey’s and Mr. M’s.

I dunno, TFG…I think it was pronounced “Ty’ - chizz”. We could never afford to shop there… I were in Souf ‘O Klif befo I come to the upscale lower marginally middle class part of Mesquite in 1968.
