Vonage Report
Posted by TFG on 11th April 2006
I got that Vonage phone installed today, and it seems to be working just fine. Most especially lovely is the little applet that allows me to dial directly from my Outlook Contact list, or any other phone number I highlight-hotkey on my laptop. My fat-fingered wrong numbers are pretty much over. I did experience a self-generated problem, though. I was on a conference call, and loaded up a high-bandwidth, streaming-audio page, and practically cratered the audio. To Vonage’s credit, the call wasn’t dropped, just unintelligible, until I clicked out.
I partly blame Comcast and my location in Dallas’ digital ghetto — our speeds are typically 20-50% worse than the average Comcast user, and that’s because the infrastructure is pretty ancient.
And I’m really glad I decided not to rely on Skype. My previous personal experiences were bad, and it looks like it can be a pretty bad actor.
