Billy Joe Shaver and 1100 Springs

The show last night was really good, but I think I’m getting burned out on BJS live shows now that I’ve seen the man five or six times in a fairly short time frame. I know that’s practically heretical, and I feel bad saying it. He did do a few songs from his new album, and they sounded really good. Like a dipstick, though, I forgot to buy it on the way out. 1100 Springs was an eye-opener. I’d only ever heard their music on the radio. A live show is where the rubber meets the road, and these guys are cats. I bought two of their CDs so I can catch up. I’m looking forward to catching them as headliners somewhere so I can get the full treatment. It was cool to hang out with a local media mogul and his wife, too, who are apparently big 1100 Springs fans.
There are some good shows coming to the Granada over the next few months, most especially the Gourds, but…I don’t think I’ll be going back. I told The Wife that it’s just too damn sterile in there. Probably another sign of creeping age, but I yearn for a smoky old honky-tonk. I think I’ll stick to my previous pledge to only see shows in Ft. Worth or further-flung environs. I did, yea verily, appreciate the show starting on time, though. The boys were on the mics at 8:01. That freaking NEVER happens…never.
The next live show that I’m interested in the most is Charlie Robison, who’s playing out at Southern Junction the Friday after Turkey Day. I’m seriously wary of a freaking Rockwall steakhouse for a show, though. They are affiliated with some kind of poker circuit, so that’s a +1. However, they have a mechanical bull, which is -5. Hell, I just need to start my own damn place, since I’m so dang picky. Too bad I’ve got all these responsibilities.

Open such a place, Scott. I’d like to compete for the honor of being the first drunk thrown out.

Oh, I’d love to have a honky-tonk, with a burger menu. I need to bank a few more shekels before I get into such a low margin venture, though. And shed a few dependents — I don’t mind being poor, but some do.

I know whereof you speak. And burgers …. mmmmm..

I’ve had the same thing happen to me back in my rockshow-marathon days. I and my friends would go see all the shows our favorite band was putting on in our town, or if we could swing it, follow them about the state or the country for a while. (That’s how I got to go to places like Philadelphia and Baltimore; for some reason it never occurred to me that as a grown woman I could just go to these cities with no ulterior motive. Sometimes I don’t recognize my past self as being me.)
Anyway, that may be why I no longer follow the music scene or go see live shows, even those I like. It’s not the money thing — I bought a typewriter on Ebay for fifty bucks, so it’s not like I won’t spend money on frivolous items.

A to Z Linkfest #7
It’s been a while since I did one of these. It’s fun discovering new blogs, rediscovering some I haven’t visited in a while, and of course, including some I visit almost every day.

I just recently bought the Gourds ” shinebox “and “Blood of the ram” where have these guys been all my life? Hearing them do Ziggy stardust or Snoop-dog ala bluegrass is such a trip , its sounds weird until you here it,on 1100 springs , great musicians with more tattooes than the illustrated man, Rock-on Buck, its hog butcherin’ time!
