20th Century TFG

I was shocked and surprised to get back from a quick run to Dullass yesterday evening to find that my kayak guide / HVAC man had shown up during my absence with a free condenser and apartment-size blower for my deer cabin Western Region HQ. More importantly, all of the heavy lifting and all of the crawling around in a hellishly hot attic to run wire and copper were finished. We worked till dark getting things done, then decided to leave the electrical work till today, which, we’d had a few toddies and didn’t feel like exploding.
So today we he ran the drain line, installed the circuit breaker, the low-voltage wire for the thermostat, and charged the system. It took some jacking around in the breaker panel to get the 240v stuff to work, but we finally did (I actually did some of that.) So, right now, I have honest-to-Pete refrigerated air running into the place, and goshalmighty, does it feel great compared to these damn noisy window units.

Pretty dang nice, huh? To completely finish the job, I’ve got build a little sheet-rock box around it to quiet it down…it’s easily as loud as the window units were right now. We’ll do a plenum next week to get up some air pressure, and some duct work (there’s my turn in the hot attic, by the way) in the near future to dump some of the gorgeous cold air into the back bedroom, but for the time being, it’s just a pleasure to have it be less than 80° in the front living room. I feel almost…modern, heh heh. But I’m nice and cool in a 80 year old rock house that was never designed for such things.
I sure do talk a lot about AC lately. Back in Dallas, we’ve still got a broke-down upstairs condenser, so, you know, life still sucks as there is yet more unavailable cash hemorrhaging.
