Snowball, Say HI to Hell

Posted by TFG on June 17th, 2005

If there is one (1) of my readers who can empathize with my little web buddy Francis, I will buy you a cigar and a shot. First, decode this: RDMA FibreChannel driver in my comments to begin the qualification process.

The man is a saint, friends. Politics and morals and ethics are, shall we say, a piece of cake, compared to that scenario. Alpha Geek, my behind…that’s some false modesty from The Curmudgeon.

No need for a cigar and shot, but I can somewhat empathize.

Two years ago, I had to force feed into a legacy application an iideal control system for a two-shaft gas turbine. Problem was that our software was originally designed for single shaft applications. So not only did I have to fix the two-shaft house of cards codebase, but also implement this control system which had an additional degree of freedom not properly modeled yet.

Add to that the fact that my customers were the Italian branch of our company and you can see/hear the communication difficulties unfold.

Final project took me 2 months of solid work with numerical solver balances I developed from scratch.

To this day, I’m not sure my code is used by anyone. At the time, it was of utmost importance however.

Man, that’s some stuff there. You and Francis are two of the same type. I’m so glad I never got into controller programming…spooky stuff.
