9. Who lives at Toad Hall?
10. Who is the Crown Prince of Luckenbach?

Will post answers by Saturday at my place- Texas Trifles.

My answers guesses below the fold:

No Googling was performed for this feat.
1. Prior to 9/11, what person(s) led the only enemy mainland invasion of the US and when?
- Pancho Villa, 1890s???.

2. Name the man who has been a governor of Tennesee, Govenor of Texas and President of Texas
- Sam Houston (greatest drunk in a state full of them)

3. What Texas Band were one-hit wonders with the tune “I Shot The Law”, and extra points for naming their home base.
- I know it, but it's stuck in my idiot brain -- Ronny and the Runaways, something like that. From...San Angelo???

4. What do all the following have in common: cow’s tongue, red goblet, flapjack, twisted rib, and horse crippler?
- Wildflowers?

5. First mixed up by Charles Alderton, a Waco Pharmacist. Name that concoction.
- The greatness of Dr Pepper

6. What ranch once covered 3,050, 000 acres when first established?
- King Ranch (named after the casserole)

7. What is the Texas State Motto?
- “Drive Friendly”, by Gov Dolph Briscoe
(it’s really “Friendship“, something to do with when we thought all Injuns were rational, like the Caddos)

8. What do the colors of the state flag stand for?
- Blue is our Loyalty to Col. Wm. B. Travis, white is the Purity of the Souls of our Women, red is the blood of the Texicans who died at the Alamo (I really don't have a clue; probably something weepy)

9. Who lives at Toad Hall?
- Never, ever heard of it. Probably some college-boy answer.

10. Who is the Crown Prince of Luckenbach?
- Depends on who's the loudest drunk when the argument comes up. My money's on Jerry Jeff Walker, though, since he had an album by that name.

Fill in your answers below.

  1. Joaquin Ochoa Says:

Texas Won’t Name Road After Willie Nelson 1 hour, 55 minutes ago

AUSTIN, Texas - Singer Willie Nelson’s name is off the road again.

A state legislator had proposed naming a 49-mile stretch of Texas Highway 130 being built around Austin in Nelson’s honor.

But two Republican senators, Steve Odgen of Bryan and Jeff Wentworth of San Antonio, said they didn’t want Nelson’s name on the road that crosses their districts, citing the musician’s fondness for drinking and smoking, and active campaigning for Democratic candidates.

“It’s frustrating, and sad in a way, but at this point, there is no reason to make this an unpleasant experience for anyone, especially Willie, so I’ll take no further action on the bill,” Sen. Gonzalo Barrientos, an Austin Democrat and the bill’s author, said Wednesday.

Barrientos said he wanted to honor Nelson, “who has been responsible for so much good music and so many good works.”

  2. Mike Says:

    1. What about the British in 1812? (not sure why that would be Tejas)
    2. Ditto yours.
    3. Maybe this should be “I Fought the Law”? written by Sonny Curtis of Crickets fame (post Buddy Holly). But not one-hit wonders with Buddy.
So I’m guessing Bobby Fuller Four (I think) out in West TX (El Paso?) 1964 or 65? (I’m that old…)
    4. Cacti - horse crippler is a giveaway…
    5. Ditto yours
    6. XIT - the ranch that funded our capitol building.
    7. Love your answer.
    8. If your answer is not correct, it certainly should be.
    9. I agree with you.
    10. You forget Waylon?

  3. Scott Chaffin Says:

    1. I thought the Brits, too, but it’s naught to do with Texas.
    3. I’m sure it was Fought, and Bobby Fuller Four sounds right.
    4. Ach - excellent.
    6. So which one was actually bigger? I see 3MM, I think King. I’m fuzzy on this one.
    10. Well, I kinda waffled. Waylon would be King in my books, see, and she said Prince. Since Waylon will always be King, JJW can never get any higher than Prince.

  4. Mike Says:

    1. Pancho Villa is probably what she was looking for (early 1900’s I think, though - Patton was one of his pursuers). Question is flawed, I think.
    6. XIT was bigger (most of the panhandle. King is under 1M acres (but still bigger than Rhode Island)
    10. I’m not sure on this one either… and you make a good point (of course there’s always Willie to consider) As I was typing this I went to Pattie’s site and see that we’re both furiner’s if we don’t know the answer is Hondo…
    hmmmmm….

  5. Scott Chaffin Says:

I was way off base on my ginormous Texas ranches, huh?

Hondo??? What-freaking-ever. I’ll stipulate that he’s colorful, but he’s basically just a regular cat.

I love Willie, but I’ll always think of him as getting out and holding the gate open while Waylon roared through. Unfair, perhaps, but digustabus non disputandum.

  6. Mike Says:

I’m thinking there’s a bunch of people in this state who’ve never even heard of XIT. King is far better known, at least in popular culture. Tour the capitol next time you’re down here in Austin, and learn more than you ever wanted to know about the XIT.

  7. Scott Chaffin Says:

I just checked out the Handbook of Texas entry about it. Pretty cool stuff (1500 miles of fence!), and it’s ringing some vague 7th grade bells. I’ve always heard of the XIT but I’m ashamed that I didn’t know any more of it’s history.

  8. Big Bopper Says:

    1. Pancho Villa — around 1920?

    2. Sam Houston

    3. The Bobby Fuller Four from Baytown

    4. Cactus

    5. Dr. Pepper and it still outsells Coke in Waco.

    6. King Ranch

    7. Friendship

    8. The colors represent bravery (red), purity (white), and loyalty (blue).

    9. Stanley Marsh III

    10. Hondo Crouch

  9. Cowtown Pattie Says:

Yes, I screwed the pooch with the wording of number 1, but I was looking for Pancho Villa.

    Thanks for the linky, Scotty!

I think I’ll try this again. It was fun…

Hey, I am going to be on the radio tomorrow morning. Courtesy of Jim Lago in Corpus. He read the trivia and wants to do it on the air. I am nervous as a cat in a room full of rocking chairs…
