That was completely predictable

Posted by TFG on February 6th, 2005

The Eagles vomiting all over themselves? Who couldn’t guess that would happen? That was an embarrassing display of NFC East football…shameful, in fact. Buncha lollygagging mama’s boys…

Kudos to the Patriots, natch. Troy Aikman was 100% correct when he said that their accomplishment here in the Naughts is greater than what the Cowboys did in the previous decade. It’s happening in the era of the salary cap. That makes it completely different, and more admirable as a team accomplishment. It doesn’t diminish the record of the Pokes, but it certainly exceeds it. That ain’t easy to say.

Isn’t it interesting, too, that the student is schooling the teacher? More evidence that Bill Parcells is a pointless waste of time, a placeholder here in Dallas. I drank the Kool-Aid, and thought the Brobdingnagian Tuna still had something…it’s clear he’s just padding his stats, though.

Of course, this is the time of year where I would normally turn full focus on the NHL, except those a-holes are having a labor squabble that is likely to last the rest of this year, and probably another one. All so they can expand to places like Nashville and Shrevesport. I know we’re not a hockey town here in Dallas, but we became one in fairly short order. Well, whatever — eff em. Bring back my Freeze so I can afford to go to a game again and I’ll be happy. Anything to avoid being forced to generate fan-love for the Gangstas in Undies.

Bah. Pitchers and catchers report in a week or three, but my beloved team has done jack-shit in the Hot Stove part of the season. They’re going to get creamed, as per usual. Still and all, three hours at the Ballpark cures one hell of a lot of TFG surliness. Can’t happen soon enough.

PS viz Commercials: Jack in the Box rules over them all. Has for a long time now. All hail the ping-pong ball head.

I just said the same thing to ya. Although Brady didn’t get his third SB MVP, they still did this in the salary cap era. Pretty impressive.

they do it by team work. Owens is on the losing side and he was soooo happy at the post game press confrence becuase his stats were great and no one predicted he could do that good. If he had his choice between have good stats but his team lose or winning and having a crappy game he would take the loss evrey time.

Okay, before we bail on the Big Bill experiment, let this dejected Cowboys and Sooners fan interject just this little bit….

Yes, in retrospect, the Cowboys stood WAY too pat in the offseason, when there were big talent gaps they needed to fill, and maybe even some scheme changes (I’m ready to ditch the midget linebackers, I really am!).

BUT, they were coming off a 10-win playoff season and had a roster full of young players that Parcells obviously hoped to develop in the New England mode….

I said going into the season that I thought Testaverde was a one-season upgrade over the erratic Quincy Carter. Since press reports now say that Carter went into drug rehab in the midst of the Jets playoff run, I’ll stick by that somewhat. Testaverde is not the long term answer in Dallas, but I don’t think he was a downgrade from Carter. Maybe he wasn’t much of an upgrade. I’d concede wash, but I don’t think QB was the main prob with this team.

I thought between Jones and George, they’d have a slight upgrade at RB. I was all wrong on George, who was useless. By the time Jones got healthy, it was too late. Parcells’ fault for not having any depth at RB? Sure, I guess you can assign some blame there. Corey Dillon sure runs pretty, but could Dallas have gotten him? I dunno.

Offensive line — problems. Here, I think we can assign big blame. I think Parcells thought some players would grow more in the second season under him. Instead, they regressed. The line is where “Parcells football” starts, on both sides of the ball. Failure this season on both sides of the ball.

D-Line: See above. Not enough playmakers, too many nice guys. The only free agent signing had no impact.

BUT, was it so crazy for Parcells to expect that last year’s defense would remain strong? Sure, you don’t count on losing Woodson, and you’re reaching by not bringing in a real CB, but still… was it time to consider blowing up the defense and starting over after a 10 win season when that D was the strength of the team, AND you shelled out big bucks to keep Zimmer from taking the Nebraska job?

It may well be that Parcells has lost his mind. This season was disappointing, especially the handling of the QBs at the end. Firing the kicking coach doesn’t suggest to me that Parcells has a good handle on what needs to be done. But, let’s just see…. I actually expected the crap on the field THIS season to be last season’s result (not the fluke 10 wins), so I’m looking at this almost as Year Two of Big Bill. If he muffs this offseason, then my bitching is going to get louder. For now, it’s still kind of wait and see…

Here’s where I wonder about Bill:
    - moving to the 3-4 defense this year: WTF? Total re-tooling time…total. Defense will suck for 1 year, minimum. I’ll be happy to eat those words, of course.
    - QB handling: gross incompetence; Interceptaverde should have been the backup, and only played if Henson were hurt or throwing interceptions in the double digits. We have to groom a QB some how, some way.
    - Fluke 10-win season: you could see it, I could see it. Bill can’t?
    - Bill’s successor: who is it? Where do we go when he goes?

I’d be as thrilled as anybody to see Bill turn this around, but I just can’t see it as anything more than two more years of struggling with no obvious plan in place. I don’t see Bill getting a long-term fire in his gut that it takes…why should he? He’s really got nothing to prove.

I could go totally pessimistic, and tell you that Bob Stoops will come in after two more years of Bill struggling, and The Bob will struggle his first two years as well before getting it turned around, but it’s early in the week yet, and I’m still bright eyed and optimistic. Maybe I’ll come back here about Weds afternoon, and revisit this thread!
