Time to pull the ribs. Smoked corn-on-the-cob, too. And I’ve got them ALL TO MYSELF.

Here piggie, piggie, piggie!

The Queen of BBQ

Posted by TFG on 19th July 2003

Today is pork rib smokin’ day. As you may recall from previous lessons, the pork rib is the Queen of BBQ Land, while the brisket is king. I guess that makes beer-can chicken the bishop or something.

I’ve got a five-pound rack of pork spare-ribs that I just slapped on the grate. The typical TFG rub was used: lots of cayenne pepper, and about half as much black pepper. I mixed in a tee-tiny bit of garlic powder, too, but I’m not a big garlic guy when it comes to BBQ. Smoke ‘em for 4-6 hours at 200°F. I regret getting schnockered last night, and not putting the rub on them then, so as to allow it time to soak in. Towards the end, I’m going to mop half of them with Stubb’s Spicy BBQ sauce. I will compare and contrast for you later.

Stubb’s is one area where I will compromise and use something off the shelf. As far as I’m concerned, it’s the best store-bought sauce out there. Stubbs, for a brief time, had a Dallas outfit. I wish they were still here — they made some of the best BBQ I can remember.

Rangers trade for pitching

The Rangers have begun executing their plan of converting some of their young offensive players into pitching depth, completing a deal that sends outfielder Ryan Ludwick to the Cleveland Indians for pitcher Ricardo Rodriguez and outfielder Shane Spencer.
Spencer was added to the deal as right-handed-power depth in case the Rangers are able to trade Juan Gonzalez in the next couple of weeks.

Rodriguez, 25, is a 6-foot-3 right-hander who is a highly regarded pitching prospect, but who also comes with some health issues. He is on the disabled list with damaged cartilage in his right hip that required a cortisone shot Friday and could require surgery.

Why do I get the feeling we just re-acquired Justin Thompson? Granted, he’s got a bum hip and not a durn rotator cuff that’s shredded, but still. I’d like to see us get something besides a Shane Spencer if we’re gonna be out spending capital.
